چکیده

The squirrel-cage induction motor remains the workhorse of the petrochemical industry because of its versatility and ruggedness. However, it has its limitations, which if exceeded will cause premature failure of the stator, rotor, bearings or shaft. This paper is the final abridgement and update of six previous papers for the Petroleum and Chemical Industry Committee of the IEEE Industry Applications Society presented over the last 24 years and includes the final piece dealing with shaft failures. A methodology is provided that will lead operations personnel to the most likely root causes of failure. Check-off sheets are provided to assist in the orderly collection of data to assist in the analysis. As the petrochemical industry evolves from reactive to time based, to preventive, to trending, to diagnostics, and to a predictive maintenance attitude, more and more attention to root cause analysis will be required. This paper will help provide a platform for the establishment of such an evolution. The product scope includes lowand medium-voltage squirrel-cage induction motors in the 1–3000–hp range with anti friction bearings. However, much of this material is applicable to other types and sizes.

Failure analysis of a dynamometer drive shaft coupled to an engine

A typical dynamometer drive shaft was damaged during its working condition. This failure was repeated in four cases. In the present article, a failure analysis of a dynamometer drive shaft has been performed. To analyze the failure, the material investigation was carried out by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images. Additionally, the micro-structure of the failed coupling shaft was photogra...

Induction Motor especially the squirrel cage type of this motor plays important role in industry. According to the application type, this motor place against various stresses that are caused failure in the motor. The most common failure is related to the Stator winding. Among these failures are turn-to-turn, coil-to-coil and phase to phase faults. Flow the high current do to the induction resul...

Shaft Grounding— A Solution to Motor Bearing Currents

Variable Frequency Drives induce shaft voltages onto the shaft of the driven motor because of the extremely high speed switching of the insulated gate bipolar transistors which produce the pulse width modulation used to control AC motors in heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration systems. This voltage induced on the shaft becomes great enough to overcome the dielectric of the o...

Effect of PWM Inverters on AC Motor Bearing Currents and Shaft Voltages

wavefronts especially increase the magnitude of the above electrical problems, leading to motor bearing material erosion and early mechanical failure. Previous literature suggests that shaft voltage-bearing current problems under 60 Hz sinewave operation are predominantly electromagnetically induced. It is proposed that under PWM operation these same problems are now predominantly an electrosta...

Calculation and Analysis of Reliability with Consideration of Common Cause Failures (CCF) (Case Study: The Input of the Dynamic Positioning System of a Submarine)

Abstract The reliability and safety of any system is the most important qualitative characteristic of a system. This qualitative characteristic is of particular importance in systems whose functions are under various stresses, such as high temperature, high speed, high pressure, etc. A considerable point, which is rarely taken into account when calculating the reliability and safety of syst...
